BEYOND THE PICK-UP DESK
Places to visit from San Jose
Use San Jose as your starting point to explore San José. A city cultural stop and a conditional volcano excursion show contrasting sides of the Central Valley.
National Theatre of Costa Rica
The National Theatre is one of San José's principal historic cultural buildings.
Check tour or performance access before arriving and explore the central district on foot. Use a planned parking location; a car is more useful for excursions outside the city than between neighbouring downtown sights.
Poás Volcano National Park
Poás is an active volcanic landscape in the mountains north of San José.
Only plan the drive after checking official park status, reservations and weather. Volcanic activity can restrict access, and cloud may hide the view; follow park instructions and keep an alternative outing in mind.
These are separate visit ideas, not a timed one-day itinerary. Map links use a general starting point: set your actual hotel or pick-up address and check visitor access, parking and current conditions before travelling.
A car for the parts of your trip that need it
Compare the total rental price and the deposit, payment and mileage terms for your dates. Walk or use local transport where that is more practical.
VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.
📍 Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO): in the Alajuela area, roughly 15–20 km northwest of central San José, with road links to Ruta 1 and Ruta 27.
Why Rent a Car at San José Airport
Costa Rica's best-known sights are spread out: Arenal to the north, Monteverde in the mountains, Manuel Antonio on the Pacific coast, and the Caribbean side to the east. Public buses are cheap but slow and indirect, and private shuttles between regions add up on a multi-stop trip. A car gives you control over start times, stops at viewpoints and detours to smaller places.
Our advice: if you land late in the evening, spend the first night near the airport and collect the car in the morning, or ask the provider to deliver it to your hotel. Driving unfamiliar mountain roads in the dark, especially in the rainy season, is the part most visitors regret.
Drive Times from SJO
Times are approximate and change a lot with the hour and the season; use a live navigation app for the real figure.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| San José centre | ~15–20 km | about 30–60 min depending on traffic |
| Arenal / La Fortuna | ~130–150 km | about 3–4 hours |
| Monteverde | ~140–170 km | about 3.5–4.5 hours, with a slow final section |
| Manuel Antonio | ~160–170 km | about 2.5–3.5 hours via Ruta 27 |
| Jacó | ~100–110 km | about 1.5–2 hours via Ruta 27 |
| Poás Volcano area | ~35–45 km | about 1–1.5 hours |
| Liberia area | ~210–230 km | about 3.5–4.5 hours |
Picking Up at SJO: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many will deliver to a hotel. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a named counter unless it is written on the car card. Allow time for the paperwork, the insurance explanation and a walk-around inspection before you leave.
Late arrival? Many international flights land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) — many agencies accept a valid home licence together with a passport showing a stamped entry for a limited period, but rules and agency policies differ, so confirm with the agency what it needs before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at SJO
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: the dry season, roughly December to April, is the busiest and dearest; the green (rainy) season from about May to November is quieter and usually cheaper, although holiday weeks can still be pricey
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Costa Rica Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. In Costa Rica the mandatory third-party liability cover (often called SLI or TPL) is required by law and is frequently missing from the headline online price; make sure it is included when you compare. Tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Mandatory Insurance, 4x4 or Sedan, and River Crossings
Costa Rican law requires third-party liability insurance (often called SLI or TPL). It is frequently missing from the headline price in online searches, so compare the all-in total and confirm on the car card what is included. Full-coverage options reduce the excess further.
Choosing the car class is a real decision. A sedan or compact is fine for the main paved routes to San José, Jacó and Manuel Antonio. A 4x4 or high-clearance SUV is worth it if you plan Monteverde's final stretch, rural beach areas or unpaved roads. River crossings are generally not covered by insurance and can cause severe damage, so never cross a river or flooded road unless you are certain; ask the agency about its policy before you go.
- Ask for the all-in price including the mandatory cover
- Pick a 4x4 only if your route needs it; check the car card
- Do not cross rivers or flooded fords
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Roads, Tolls and Ruta 27
The main route to the Pacific, Ruta 27, is a toll road from the San José area towards Caldera and the central Pacific coast; carry some cash or a card the tolls accept and ask the agency how it handles tolls. The airport also sits close to Ruta 1, the main road towards the northwest. Off the main routes, roads can be narrow, with pot-holes, sharp bends, landslide debris after heavy rain and one-lane bridges, so allow more time than the map suggests. Cattle, cyclists and pedestrians use the road edge in villages.
Driving Near SJO: Roads and Habits
Daylight is short and falls early, around the same time year-round, so plan to arrive before dusk. Fog and heavy rain on mountain roads reduce visibility quickly. Use navigation with offline maps for areas with patchy signal, and leave valuables out of sight in parked cars.
- Traffic drives on the right; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable child seat
- Speed limits are signed and often lower than you expect (typically around 40–60 km/h in towns and around 80–90 km/h on main roads); speed cameras and police checks exist, so check the current limits
- Strict drink-driving rules with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone while driving
- Many bridges are one-lane: look for the yield sign and give way to the side that has priority
- Pot-holes, landslides and washed-out sections are common in the rainy season; slow down on unfamiliar roads and avoid driving after dark outside towns
- Do not cross rivers or drive on beaches: insurance is generally not valid there
- Check with the agency before crossing a border; cross-border use of a rental car is usually not allowed
- Leave nothing visible in a parked car; theft from vehicles at viewpoints and beaches is a known problem
