📍 Pardubice: a city in east Bohemia, about 100–120 km east of Prague, with a historic square, a castle and a racecourse.
Do You Need a Car in Pardubice?
Pardubice's old square, the castle and the gingerbread shops are within walking distance, and the city has a good rail link to Prague. Public transport inside the city is easy, but many sights of east Bohemia are in small towns and villages with sparse service.
A car lets you combine the city with Kunětická hora castle on its volcanic hill, Hradec Králové, Litomyšl, the spas and the mountains. Our advice: take the train to Pardubice if you are visiting only the city, and rent for the days you want to explore; ask the agency to deliver the car to your hotel.

Roads, Events and Winter Conditions
The D35 and the road to Hradec Králové are the main arteries, with roundabouts and priority roads in the countryside. Pardubice's historic centre has pedestrian streets and restricted zones; park at the edge, in a signed car park or in a hotel space, and read the zone sign.
On race days and during big events, roads around the racecourse and the city are closed or very busy, and nearby car parks fill early. In winter, snow and ice are common on the hills towards the mountains: ask about winter tyres and check road reports before long drives.
- Check the dates of major events before you plan the drive
- Use signed car parks at the edge of the centre
- Ask the agency about winter tyres from late autumn
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Pardubice, or collected in Prague or at Prague Airport (PRG). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- a valid driving licence; licences from many countries are accepted, and an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be asked for if yours is not in the Latin alphabet or not from the EU/EEA — check with the agency and the authorities before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. The motorway e-vignette, parking, fines and any cross-border fee are handled separately — ask the agency what is included. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Pardubice: Roads and Habits
Traffic is calmer than in Prague, but cyclists use many roads and tram-like priority is replaced by roundabouts and priority-road signs. Watch for farm vehicles and, in spring and autumn, deer at dusk on country roads.
- Traffic drives on the right; give way to vehicles coming from the right at unsigned junctions and watch for the priority-road sign
- Dipped headlights are required all day, all year, not only in bad weather
- Zero alcohol for drivers: the limit is effectively nil and penalties are heavy, so do not drink at all before driving
- Speed limits are signed; typically 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside built-up areas and up to 130 km/h on motorways — verify the signs, because limits change by section
- A motorway e-vignette is needed on motorways and some expressways; ask whether your rental already has one
- Winter tyres are required in winter conditions on signed roads and during the winter period; ask the agency how the car is equipped
- Trams have priority in cities and you must not overtake a stopped tram when passengers are boarding from the road
- Seatbelts are compulsory, children need a suitable seat, and a handheld phone is not allowed
- The car must carry the standard safety items (hi-vis vest, warning triangle, first-aid kit); check they are in the boot
- Do not take the car off-road: insurance is not valid there
