📍 Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (BUD): south-east of Budapest, roughly 16–20 km from the centre, with quick access to the M0 ring road and the motorways to the lake, Eger, Vienna and Pécs.
Why Rent a Car at Budapest Airport
Budapest is a city where you do not need a car: trams, metro, buses and taxis cover the centre, and the airport has a dedicated bus link and taxis. The reason to rent at BUD is the rest of the country. Lake Balaton, the wine towns of Eger and Tokaj, the Danube Bend and the university city of Pécs are far easier by car than by train, and a car lets you cross to Vienna, Bratislava or Zagreb with the agency's permission.
Our advice: if you spend your first nights in the city, collect the car only on the day you leave Budapest, or ask the provider to deliver it to your hotel instead of paying for parking while it sits idle. If you are heading straight to the lake or to Eger, collecting at the airport saves a transfer.

Picking Up at BUD: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in a car park, some at a yard nearby with a shuttle, and many deliver to a hotel in Budapest. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a named counter unless it is written on the car card. Before you leave the lot, ask the agent to confirm the motorway vignette (matrica) for your dates: it is tied to the number plate, so there is no sticker to look for on the windscreen. If your flight lands late, give the provider your flight number.
Late arrival? Many flights land late at night or very early. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- Your national driving licence; licences from EU/EEA countries are normally accepted, and for other licences an International Driving Permit (IDP) is often recommended or requested, especially if the licence is not in the Latin alphabet — rules can change, so ask the agency what it needs before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at BUD
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: summer (roughly June to August, with Lake Balaton at its busiest), the Christmas markets in December and big events in Budapest push prices up; late autumn and late winter are usually quieter and cheaper
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Hungary Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Motorway vignettes, fines and paid parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Vignette, M0 and Motorways Around BUD
Hungary uses an electronic vignette (matrica) for motorways and expressways instead of toll booths. It is registered against the plate, so what matters is that the agency has bought the right validity for your dates and routes. Ask whether the car already has one, how long it lasts and whether a vignette for a short trip is covered or billed to you later. Driving on a motorway without a valid one can lead to a fine that the agency passes on. The airport sits near the M0, the ring road around Budapest: it is the quickest way to the M1 (Győr, Vienna), M7 (Balaton), M3 (Eger) and M5/M6 (Szeged, Pécs), and it is much better than driving through the centre. If you cross into Austria, Slovakia or another country, check that country's own toll or vignette rules too.
Airport Parking, Fuel and Return
If you return the car at BUD, leave extra time: the airport roads can be busy at peak waves of flights, and refuelling nearby before the return avoids a refuelling fee. Check the fuel policy on the car card (full-to-full is usual) and note whether the car takes petrol or diesel. Photograph the fuel gauge and odometer at return with the agent present, and keep your return voucher.
Driving Near BUD: Roads and Habits
Outside Budapest, roads are good and signed in clear Hungarian; navigation apps handle place names and exits well. Watch for speed cameras, including average-speed sections on some motorways, and for level crossings on secondary roads. In towns, priority-to-the-right junctions and trams catch out visitors. At night, unlit rural roads can have deer and farm vehicles.
- Traffic drives on the right; at an unmarked junction give way to traffic coming from the right
- Zero alcohol for drivers: the limit in Hungary is effectively nil, so do not drink at all before driving
- Dipped headlights are required outside built-up areas, including in daytime; many drivers simply keep them on all the time
- Typical speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, about 90 km/h on ordinary roads, about 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways; always follow the signs, because speed cameras are common
- Motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette (matrica) linked to the number plate; confirm with the agency that the rental car already has a valid one
- Seatbelts are compulsory for everyone, children need a suitable seat, and handheld phones are not allowed
- Always give way to trams and watch for them in Budapest; never stop or park on tram tracks
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid there
- Right turn on red is not allowed unless a green arrow permits it
- Check with the agency whether the car has winter tyres or snow chains in the cold months, and for which routes they are required
