📍 Benaulim: a quiet beach village in south Goa, about 10–15 km from Goa Dabolim Airport (GOI).
Is a Car Worth It in Benaulim?
Benaulim itself is easy on foot or by scooter-taxi, but the beach is a long walk from many hotels, and public transport to other parts of Goa is limited. A car pays off for Palolem, Old Goa, Panjim and the markets in Margao.
Our advice: book the car for the days you travel rather than the whole stay, and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel. Check that your accommodation has parking.

Village Lanes, Paddy Fields and Parking in Benaulim
The roads to the beach are narrow village lanes with scooters, cyclists and cows, and some lanes flood or wash out in the monsoon. Parking at the beach is informal; use hotel car parks or signed bays and do not block gates. Do not drive onto the sand: insurance is not valid off-road.
- Avoid narrow lanes after dark
- Ask your hotel about parking before you book
- Fines from police are charged to you through the agency
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Benaulim, or collected at Goa Dabolim Airport (GOI). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) together with your national driving licence — foreign visitors are generally expected to carry both, so ask the agency exactly what you need before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Benaulim: Roads and Habits
Expect cows, scooters and pedestrians in the lanes, and sudden speed bumps. Keep speed low and use navigation.
- Traffic drives on the left and rental cars are right-hand drive; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Traffic is dense and chaotic: scooters, auto-rickshaws, buses and trucks overtake on both sides, and horns are used constantly
- Cows, dogs and pedestrians on the road are normal, even on main roads; slow down and never assume they will move
- Speed limits are signed (typically around 40–50 km/h in towns and up to about 60–80 km/h on main roads); police checks are common
- Strict drink-driving rules — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Potholes and unmarked speed bumps are common, and the monsoon (about June to September) floods low roads
- Avoid driving after dark: lighting is patchy and many vehicles have no lights
- Do not take the car off the paved road or onto beaches: insurance is not valid there
