Car Rental Florence — Hotel Delivery, No Deposit Options, Full Insurance

Car rental in Florence is made for Tuscany: Chianti, Siena, San Gimignano and the hill towns. Many local agencies deliver the car to your hotel, and the search lets you choose the place with "Specify location". Offers include no-deposit and low-deposit terms, usually with full insurance.

The whole historic centre of Florence is a ZTL, and fines for entering it are the most common surprise.

VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.

📍 Florence: the Tuscan capital in central Italy; Pisa Airport (PSA) is about 85 km west.

Do You Need a Car in Florence?

Not for the city. The historic centre is compact and almost entirely a ZTL, and parking is scarce. Walk, take buses or taxis.

A car is the way to see the Tuscan countryside: the Chianti wine road, Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra and the Val d'Orcia. Our advice: collect the car at the end of your stay in Florence, or have it delivered to a car park outside the ZTL or to a countryside villa.

The ZTL and Hill Roads

The historic centre of Florence is a ZTL with cameras at the entry points, and some hotels can notify your plate to the authority; ask in advance. Outside it, use a car park at the edge of the city or near a tram or bus line. In the hills, roads are narrow with stone walls and white gravel (strade bianche) tracks; some are not paved, so insurance is not valid there.

Pick-Up and Delivery

Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel or a car park in Florence, or collected at Pisa Airport (PSA). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.

Insurance and Deposit Explained

With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. ZTL fines, autostrada tolls and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.

Driving in Florence: Roads and Habits

Tuscan roads wind through hills with blind bends and cyclists, and the villages have narrow arches and one-way systems. Autumn mist and winter ice can linger in valleys.

Frequently Asked Questions: Car Rental Florence

Can I rent a car in Florence without a deposit?
Often yes, with a local agency and full insurance. Use the No deposit filter and read the car card for the exact terms.
Can I rent a car in Florence without a credit card?
Some agencies accept another payment method. Many still block the deposit on a credit card, so choose the No credit card filter and check the car card.
Do I need a car in Florence?
Not in the city. A car helps for Chianti, Siena and Tuscan hill towns.
Can a rental car be delivered to my hotel in Florence?
Many local agencies deliver. Use the "Specify location" option in the search and check the car card for any fee.
Can I drive into the centre of Florence?
Almost all of it is a ZTL. Park outside and walk or take a bus.
Which airport is best for Florence?
Pisa (PSA) has the widest choice of pick-ups and is about 85 km away; Florence's own airport is smaller. Check pick-up options in the search.
What is a ZTL and how do I avoid a fine?
A ZTL is a limited traffic zone in a town centre, signed with a red circle and an electronic sign showing when it is active. Cameras read the plate, and entering without a permit leads to a fine that can arrive months later through the agency. Park outside the zone, follow the navigation carefully and ask your hotel whether it can register the plate.
How do tolls work on Italian autostrade?
Usually you take a ticket at the entry and pay at the exit by card or cash in the marked lanes; ask the agency how it handles tolls and avoid the yellow tag-only lanes. Some autostrade, especially in Sicily and Sardinia, are free.
Do I need an international driving permit to drive in Italy?
Licences from EU and EEA countries are normally accepted. Drivers with licences from other countries are commonly asked for an IDP or a translation alongside the licence, but rules depend on the issuing country and change, so verify with the agency before you travel.
Which side of the road do they drive on in Italy?
On the right. Overtake on the left, and give way as the signs and priority rules show; roundabouts are usually clockwise with priority for traffic already in them.
What happens if I get a traffic fine in Italy?
Fines are sent to the agency, which gives your details to the authorities and charges you, often with a handling fee. They can arrive months after the trip, so keep your rental paperwork.
