📍 Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU): at Plaine Magnien in the south-east of Mauritius, with the M1 motorway to Port Louis and coast roads to the resorts.
Why Rent a Car at Mauritius Airport
Mauritius has buses, taxis and hotel transfers, but the airport is far from the north and west resorts and taxis for a full day of sightseeing cost much more than a rental. A car lets you leave when you like, stop at viewpoints, beaches and markets and reach places that buses do not serve well.
Our advice: collect the car at the airport if you are driving to a resort or touring from day one. If you want a few relaxed days at one hotel first, book the car from the day you start exploring and ask the provider to deliver it to your hotel.

Picking Up at MRU: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
Mauritius has one international airport, so the choice is mostly about where to meet. How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in the car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many will deliver to a hotel on any coast. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a specific named counter unless it is written on the car card. Enter your flight number when you book so the agent can track delays.
Late arrival? Many international flights land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) if your licence is not in English or French (or the Latin alphabet) — check with the agency before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at MRU
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: prices are highest around Christmas and New Year and in the cooler, drier months from about May to October; the hot, wetter summer from about November to April is usually cheaper
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Mauritius Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Roads, Roundabouts and Parking in Mauritius
The M1 motorway links the airport with Port Louis, and the M2 continues north towards Grand Baie. Other roads are two-lane and can be slow behind buses and sugar-cane lorries. Roundabouts are common and drivers do not always signal. Parking is easy at most beaches and resorts; in Port Louis and Grand Baie in the evening look for signed or paid car parks. Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental, sometimes weeks later and with a handling fee.
Driving Near MRU: Roads and Habits
Main roads are paved and signed in English and French, but side roads can be narrow, with steep drops and pedestrians at the edge. Rush hours around Port Louis fill the M1 and M2, and the road north to Grand Baie slows in the evening. At night, lighting is patchy outside towns.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on open roads and up to 110 km/h on motorways); police checks and cameras are used
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Roads can be narrow, with buses, trucks, pedestrians and dogs; sugar-cane lorries are slow and wide
- In the summer rainy season heavy rain can flood roads; follow official cyclone and weather warnings and do not drive through standing water
- Do not take the car on beaches or unpaved tracks: insurance is not valid there
