VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.
📍 Rabat: the capital of Morocco on the Atlantic coast, across the river from Salé, with an airport a few kilometres away.
Do You Need a Car in Rabat?
For the sights, no: the Kasbah of the Udayas, the medina, Hassan Tower and the Chellah are within taxi and tram reach, and parking is controlled. A car is useful for Casablanca, Meknes and Volubilis, and the coast towards Tangier.
Our advice: book from the day you leave the capital and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel.

Traffic, Tram Lines and Parking
The tram runs on dedicated tracks with its own signals; do not stop or park on the rails. Parking in the centre is paid and monitored by attendants, and official areas near ministries and the palace have checkpoints and restrictions, so follow signs and police instructions.
- Never block tram tracks or stops
- Use hotel or signed car parks and keep valuables out of sight
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Rabat, or collected at the airport or station. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence — many agencies accept a licence in Latin script, but rules and agency policies differ, so confirm exactly what you need before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Motorway tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Rabat: Roads and Habits
Avenues are wide, but the bridges to Salé jam at rush hours. Drivers cut across lanes and pedestrians cross at tram stops.
- Traffic drives on the right; cars are left-hand drive
- Police checkpoints are frequent at town entrances and on main roads: slow down, be polite, and carry your licence, passport copy and car papers
- Speed limits are signed (typically 60 km/h or lower in towns, around 100 km/h on main roads and up to 120 km/h on motorways); radar and hand-held speed traps are common, so respect every sign, and stop fully at stop signs
- Roundabouts: priority habits vary and many drivers enter assertively, so approach slowly, give way as signed and watch for scooters and carts
- Strict drink-driving rules with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Avoid night driving outside cities: pedestrians, bicycles, donkeys, livestock and unlit vehicles use the road
- Do not take the car off the paved road or onto desert pistes: insurance is not valid there
- Agencies generally do not allow rental cars to leave Morocco; ask before planning any ferry or border crossing
