📍 Sainte-Marie: a town on the north coast of Reunion Island, right next to Reunion Airport (RUN) and a short drive east of Saint-Denis.
Do You Need a Car in Sainte-Marie?
For the town itself, not necessarily: Sainte-Marie is a practical base with shops, a few hotels and quick access to the airport, but most sights are elsewhere. The north-east has waterfalls, markets and small beaches, and a car makes them much easier to reach than the bus. Buses exist but run on fixed routes.
Our advice: book the car for the days you travel, and take it for the cirques and the east coast, where public transport is thin. If you stay only in Saint-Denis, parking and jams can be a headache, so consider whether a car is needed on those days.

Coast Road, Roundabouts and Parking
The N2 passes the town and joins a chain of roundabouts, retail areas and traffic lights, so the road can slow sharply at peak hours, especially toward Saint-Denis in the morning. In town, look for marked car parks and read the signs; some areas have paid or time-limited parking, so check the rules on the spot. Keep valuables out of sight when you park at viewpoints and waterfalls.
- Allow extra time for Saint-Denis in the morning and for the return in the evening
- Use marked parking and check signs for time limits
- Do not leave bags visible in a parked car
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
The Eastern Coast: Waterfalls and Cloud
East of Sainte-Marie the coast is green and rainy: sugar cane, waterfalls and small villages. Mornings are usually clearer and drier, and showers often arrive in the afternoon. The road continues to Saint-Benoit and further to the south-east and the volcano area, but the distances add up, so split the trip over more than one day if you want to enjoy it.
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually at Reunion Airport (RUN) or delivered to your hotel in or near Sainte-Marie. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- valid driving licence — a licence issued in an EU/EEA country or in France is generally accepted, while other licences may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a certified translation; requirements can change, so confirm with the agency which documents it wants and check current rules before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fuel, parking and fines are billed separately, and mountain roads with tight bends make scrapes common, so check the excess on basic cover. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Sainte-Marie: Roads and Habits
Expect busy roundabouts, fast traffic on the dual carriageway sections and scooters weaving through jams. Keep to the right, keep a safe gap, and use a low gear on the mountain roads inland. In rain, slow down: oily roads and fallen debris are common.
- Traffic drives on the right, and French road rules apply, as Reunion is a French overseas department
- Priority to the right can apply at some junctions without signs, and roundabouts are very common: vehicles already on the roundabout have priority
- Speed limits are signed in km/h (typically lower on the coast road through towns, higher on the four-lane stretches); speed cameras and police checks are used
- Seatbelts are compulsory for everyone, and children need a suitable child seat
- Strict drink-driving limit — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone while driving; fines can be heavy
- Mountain roads have many hairpin bends, steep drops and sudden fog or rain: use a low gear downhill and give way to uphill traffic where roads are narrow
- Do not drive on unpaved tracks or in dry riverbeds: insurance is generally not valid there
- Rental cars are meant for this island; check with the agency before planning any ferry or air transfer
- Check cyclone and heavy-rain alerts before mountain trips
- Fuel stations can be less frequent in the cirques; fill up before climbing
