📍 Seychelles: an island nation in the Indian Ocean; most visitors land at Seychelles International Airport on Mahé.
Is It Worth Renting a Car in Seychelles?
It depends on your plans. Buses are cheap but follow fixed routes, and taxis add up over several days. A rental car is helpful on Mahé and Praslin if you want to visit several beaches, viewpoints and restaurants on your own schedule. On the smallest islands, such as La Digue, cars are very limited and many visitors use bikes instead.
Roads are narrow, steep and winding, with deep drains and no shoulders, so choose a small car and drive only if you are a confident driver. Book the car for the island where you will use it, and ask the provider to deliver it to your hotel or collect it at the airport.

Airport Car Rental in Seychelles: Where to Pick Up
Seychelles International Airport on Mahé serves most visitors, so the real choice is where to collect the car and which island you will drive on. Many travellers collect the car at the airport or have it delivered to the hotel.
| Pick-up area | From SEZ | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Victoria | ~10 km | The capital and the island roads |
| Anse Royale | ~12–15 km | The south of Mahé |
| Beau Vallon | ~25 km | The north-west beach area |
| Port Glaud | ~30 km | The west coast |
How the hand-over works depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals hall or the car park, some use a nearby yard and a shuttle, and many deliver to a hotel. The search lets you choose with the "Specify location" option, and your voucher shows the manager's phone number and the meeting point. Many flights land late at night, so give the provider your flight number and confirm any out-of-hours fee.
No-Deposit Car Rental in Seychelles: How It Really Works
A deposit is the amount a rental company blocks on your card until you return the car undamaged. Many agencies block it on a credit card. With basic insurance the excess — the part of any damage you pay yourself — can be large, so the deposit is large too. "No deposit" does not mean "no insurance": it usually means you buy a higher level of cover, and the provider then has far less to protect.
What the Search Filters Mean
The booking search lets you filter by the terms that matter most:
- No deposit — nothing is blocked on your card. Usually tied to full insurance
- Low deposit — a small hold, common on economy cars
- No credit card — the provider accepts another payment method for the deposit and the rental; the exact method is on the car card
- Full insurance — the higher cover level that cuts the excess to zero or close to it
- Free cancellation and unlimited mileage — shown on the car card, so you can check before you book
What Full Coverage Usually Does Not Include
Even with full coverage, local agencies typically exclude tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage, lost keys and any damage on unpaved or off-road surfaces. Fines, tolls and parking charges are not insurance matters at all: the agency bills them to you after the rental. Read the exclusions on the car card, not only the headline.
Fines, Parking and Local Charges
Seychelles has no motorway tolls on the main roads, but fines and parking charges still apply. Police and cameras can issue fines, and a fine can reach the agency weeks after you have left; the agency will charge it to you, usually with a handling fee. Parking is limited in Victoria and at popular beaches, so use marked bays and check any local charges. Fuel is not included in the rental unless the car card says so.
Documents You Need to Rent a Car in Seychelles
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least one year; minimum age is typically 21 (some agencies ask for 23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- valid national driving licence and, depending on the agency and the licence, an International Driving Permit (IDP) — requirements can change, so confirm with the agency which documents it wants and check current rules before you travel
- Passport and proof of entry as required
- The booking voucher, and a payment method that matches the offer
Driving in Seychelles: Rules and Road Conditions
Rules in Short
- Traffic drives on the left; seatbelts are compulsory, and children need a suitable child seat
- Speed limits are low and signed — typically around 40 km/h in villages and up to about 65 km/h on open stretches
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- Do not use a handheld phone; fines can be heavy
- Buses and trucks often run in the middle of bends; slow down and keep well inside your lane
Road Conditions
Main roads are paved, but they are very narrow, steep and winding, with deep concrete drains and no shoulders. Hairpin bends cross the island, and heavy rain can make surfaces slippery or bring debris onto the road. Beach car parks are small and fill early. At night lighting is limited and pedestrians walk on the road edge.
Off-Road and Border Rules
- Insurance is not valid off-road, on beaches or on dirt tracks, even with full coverage
- A rental car normally stays on its island; Praslin cars are separate from Mahé cars, so check with the agency before moving a car by ferry
- Do not drive onto sand or into forest tracks; stay on the tarmac
- Check with the agency whether scooters and quad bikes are covered; they are generally riskier and rules differ
Which Car to Rent in Seychelles
Popular Road Trips by Car
When Is the Best Time to Rent a Car in Seychelles?
Seychelles has a warm climate all year, with a wetter period around the north-west monsoon (roughly December to February) and stronger trade winds and cooler, drier weather from about May to September. Transitional months, around April–May and October–November, are often calm. Beaches can be affected by seaweed or rough seas at different times. Check the forecast, expect rain at any time and keep plans flexible.
Photograph the Car at Pick-Up
Check the body and interior with the agent present, film or photograph every scratch and make sure each one is written in the acceptance document. This is your best protection against a damage claim when you return the car. Do the same at return, including the fuel gauge and the odometer.
Local Agencies or International Chains?
Local agencies listed through comparison services often offer lower prices, flexible pick-up and a wider choice of no-deposit and no-credit-card terms. International brands are present at the main airports, but they usually charge more and require a credit card. For most travellers a well-reviewed local agency with a real-photo car card, clear insurance terms and free cancellation is good value. Compare the full-insurance total, not only the base rate.
Top Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking the cheapest base rate and finding a large deposit at the desk — compare the all-in price with full coverage
- Choosing a large car for narrow, winding roads
- Driving at night or in heavy rain on hill roads
- Drifting toward the edge of the road: deep drains can damage wheels and the car
- Not photographing the car at pick-up and return
- Assuming a Mahé car can be taken to Praslin by ferry
- Ignoring parking limits and fines — they are billed to you after the rental
- Driving on beaches or off the tarmac: insurance does not apply
