📍 Praia: the capital of Cape Verde on the south coast of Santiago island; Santiago Airport (RAI) is a few kilometres away.
Is a Car Worth It in Praia?
In the Plateau district and along the waterfront, you can walk, and taxis are cheap for short hops. The reason to rent is Santiago itself: Cidade Velha, the markets of Assomada and the northern coast are better with your own car than by waiting for shared taxis.
Our advice: book for the days you leave town and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel. In the city, park once and walk.

City Traffic, Hills and Parking in Praia
Praia is hilly. The Plateau is on a bluff above the port, with narrow, steep and partly one-way streets, and parking is limited around the market and government buildings. Beaches such as Quebra Canela and the area near Prainha have small car parks that fill on weekends. Roads out of the city are better paved than those inside, but potholes appear after rain.
- Use hotel parking or signed car parks and keep the ticket
- Avoid the centre at the morning and evening peaks
- Do not leave valuables visible in the car
- Fines are charged to the renter after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Praia, or collected at Santiago Airport (RAI). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence — requirements for visitors can change, so ask the agency exactly what it accepts before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines, parking and fuel are billed separately, and each island has its own fleet. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Praia: Roads and Habits
Expect steep climbs, tight corners and shared taxis that stop without warning at every junction. Use a low gear on descents, keep a gap on hills and watch for pedestrians crossing between parked cars.
- Traffic drives on the right; overtake on the left and give way as signed at roundabouts
- Roads range from smooth tarmac to rough cobblestone (calçada) and loose dirt; speed limits are signed, typically about 40–50 km/h in towns and higher on open roads, so follow the signs
- Pedestrians, dogs, goats and shared taxis (aluguers) stop and turn without warning, especially in towns and villages
- Strict drink-driving rules with penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Fuel stations are few outside the main towns, so refuel before long drives and keep the tank above a quarter
- Do not leave the paved or cobbled road onto volcanic tracks, dunes or beaches: insurance is not valid there
- A rental car stays on the island where you collected it; the islands are separate and cars do not travel between them
- Steep city streets can be slippery after rain; use a low gear on descents
