📍 Santa Maria: the main resort town of Sal island, in the south, about 15–20 km from Sal Airport (SID).
Is a Car Worth It in Santa Maria?
Inside Santa Maria you can walk or take a short taxi ride, and parking near the beach and pier is tight in the evening. The sights are elsewhere: the salt crater, the sea cave and the mirage plain are 15–40 minutes away and spread out, so a car for one or two days fits well.
Our advice: book for the days you explore and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel. Leave it parked the rest of the time, since the resort is easy on foot.

Parking, Wind and Beach Rules
The old centre has narrow, partly cobbled streets, and parking by the pier and main beach fills up at midday and in the evening. Hotel and signed parking spaces are the safest choice. Wind blows sand onto the pavement and can be strong on the exposed road out of town, so slow down for gusts and keep windows closed on dusty stretches.
- Do not drive onto the beach or dunes; insurance is not valid there
- Leave nothing visible in the car when parked near the beach
- Tracks to Shark Bay and remote bays are rough; take advice from the agency
- Fines are charged to the renter after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Santa Maria, or collected at Sal Airport (SID). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence — requirements for visitors can change, so ask the agency exactly what it accepts before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines, parking and fuel are billed separately, and each island has its own fleet. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Santa Maria: Roads and Habits
Santa Maria's streets have pedestrians, bicycles, quad bikes and taxis sharing the road, and the cobbled sections are slippery when wet. Outside town the road is quiet but exposed to crosswinds, and goats and dogs may cross.
- Traffic drives on the right; overtake on the left and give way as signed at roundabouts
- Roads range from smooth tarmac to rough cobblestone (calçada) and loose dirt; speed limits are signed, typically about 40–50 km/h in towns and higher on open roads, so follow the signs
- Pedestrians, dogs, goats and shared taxis (aluguers) stop and turn without warning, especially in towns and villages
- Strict drink-driving rules with penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Fuel stations are few outside the main towns, so refuel before long drives and keep the tank above a quarter
- Do not leave the paved or cobbled road onto volcanic tracks, dunes or beaches: insurance is not valid there
- A rental car stays on the island where you collected it; the islands are separate and cars do not travel between them
- Quad bikes and beach buggies share tracks near the resort; give them space
