VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.
📍 China (Hainan): this section covers Sanya, on the southern coast of Hainan island, the tropical island province in the far south of China.
Is It Worth Renting a Car in China?
It depends on the licence. Self-drive in China is unusual for visitors because foreign licences are generally not valid and a temporary Chinese licence is usually needed. If the agency confirms you can meet the requirement, a car is a good way to see southern Hainan: the bays are spread out, the interior has mountains and the east coast has beaches that tours reach on fixed schedules. If you cannot meet it, ask about a car with a driver, or use hotel shuttles, taxis and ride-hailing.
Decide before you book whether you need a car for the whole stay or only for the days you leave your bay. A compact car is enough for Sanya, Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay and the paved roads to Wuzhishan and Wanning. Ask the provider to deliver it to your hotel or collect it at the airport, and install a Chinese-language navigation app before you arrive.

Airport Car Rental in China: Where to Pick Up
The partner search for China lists Sanya, on Hainan island. Its Phoenix Airport (SYX) is the main arrival point for the south of the island, and Sanya city and the resort bays are a short drive away.
| Pick-up area | From the airport | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sanya (SYX) | ~15–20 km to the centre | Sanya Bay, Dadonghai and city hotels |
| Yalong Bay from SYX | ~40–50 km | Resort hotels and beaches |
| Haitang Bay from SYX | ~60–80 km | Resorts and shopping |
| Wuzhishan from SYX | ~120–150 km | Mountains and the interior |
| Wanning from SYX | ~130–150 km | East-coast beaches |
How the hand-over works depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals hall or the car park, some use a nearby yard and a shuttle, and many deliver to a hotel. The search lets you choose with the "Specify location" option, and your voucher shows the manager's phone number and the meeting point. Many flights land late at night, so give the provider your flight number and confirm any out-of-hours fee.
No-Deposit Car Rental in China: How It Really Works
A deposit is the amount a rental company blocks on your card until you return the car undamaged. Many agencies block it on a credit card. With basic insurance the excess — the part of any damage you pay yourself — can be large, so the deposit is large too. "No deposit" does not mean "no insurance": it usually means you buy a higher level of cover, and the provider then has far less to protect.
What the Search Filters Mean
The booking search lets you filter by the terms that matter most:
- No deposit — nothing is blocked on your card. Usually tied to full insurance
- Low deposit — a small hold, common on economy cars
- No credit card — the provider accepts another payment method for the deposit and the rental; the exact method is on the car card
- Full insurance — the higher cover level that cuts the excess to zero or close to it
- Free cancellation and unlimited mileage — shown on the car card, so you can check before you book
What Full Coverage Usually Does Not Include
Even with full coverage, local agencies typically exclude tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage, lost keys and any damage on unpaved or off-road surfaces. Fines, tolls and parking charges are not insurance matters at all: the agency bills them to you after the rental. Read the exclusions on the car card, not only the headline.
Cameras, Tolls, Fines and Cashless Payment
Hainan has widespread traffic cameras for speed, red lights, bus lanes and parking, and fines are linked to the car's plate. They reach the agency, which will charge them to you, usually with a handling fee. The Hainan ring expressway and some other roads charge tolls; ask the agency how tolls are paid and whether the car has an electronic tag. Cashless payment through WeChat Pay or Alipay is common for fuel, parking and small shops, so check how you will pay before you drive off.
Documents You Need to Rent a Car in China
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least one year; minimum age is typically 21 (some agencies ask for 23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- Driving licence valid for China. Foreign licences and International Driving Permits are generally not accepted for driving in mainland China; visitors usually need a temporary Chinese driving licence. Rules for Hainan exist but change, so ask the agency exactly what you need before you book and before you travel
- Passport and proof of entry as required
- The booking voucher, and a payment method that matches the offer
Driving in China: Rules and Road Conditions
Rules in Short
- First check the licence: foreign licences and IDPs are generally not valid in mainland China, and visitors usually need a temporary Chinese driving licence
- Traffic drives on the right; seatbelts are compulsory for everyone and children need a suitable child seat
- Cameras are widespread; keep to the posted limits and follow bus lane and parking signs
- No alcohol at all before driving — penalties are severe
- Do not use a handheld phone
- Google Maps is not usable; use Baidu Maps or Amap and keep addresses in Chinese characters
Road Conditions
Main roads in southern Hainan are paved, modern and well marked, including the ring expressway. Traffic near the bays is heavy at weekends and holidays, and electric scooters and delivery riders ignore signals. Humidity and heat are strong, rain can be sudden, and typhoon season (roughly July to October) can bring flooding and road closures. Mountain roads towards Wuzhishan climb and have mist and rain; lighting outside towns is poor, so avoid long night drives.
Off-Road and Border Rules
- Insurance is not valid off-road, on unpaved tracks or on beaches, even with full coverage
- Rental cars are generally tied to Hainan island; do not plan to take the car elsewhere without the agency's written permission
- In a typhoon warning, do not drive along the coast or through floodwater; follow local alerts and the agency's advice
- Do not leave the car in a no-parking zone or on a bus lane; cameras issue fines automatically
Which Car to Rent in China
Popular Road Trips by Car
When Is the Best Time to Rent a Car in China?
Hainan is tropical. The driest and most pleasant months for travel are roughly November to April, which is also the busiest and most expensive time, especially around Spring Festival and the early-October holiday. Summer is hot, humid and cheaper, with sudden rain, and typhoon season runs roughly from July to October, when storms can close roads and disrupt flights. Always check forecasts and local alerts before a long drive.
Photograph the Car at Pick-Up
Check the body and interior with the agent present, film or photograph every scratch and make sure each one is written in the acceptance document. This is your best protection against a damage claim when you return the car. Do the same at return, including the fuel gauge and the odometer.
Local Agencies or International Chains?
Local agencies listed through comparison services often offer lower prices, flexible pick-up and a wider choice of no-deposit and no-credit-card terms. International brands are present at the main airports, but they usually charge more and require a credit card. For most travellers a well-reviewed local agency with a real-photo car card, clear insurance terms and free cancellation is good value. Compare the full-insurance total, not only the base rate.
Top Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking a car before confirming the licence rule — foreign licences and IDPs are generally not valid in mainland China
- Relying on Google Maps — use Baidu Maps or Amap and keep addresses in Chinese characters
- Booking the cheapest base rate and finding a large deposit at the desk — compare the all-in price with full coverage
- Parking in a bus lane or no-parking zone — cameras issue fines that reach the agency
- Driving into floodwater or along the coast in a typhoon warning
- Assuming cash or a foreign card works everywhere — check WeChat Pay or Alipay arrangements
- Taking the car onto beaches or unpaved tracks — insurance does not cover it
- Driving after any alcohol — the rule is zero
