VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.
📍 Sanya: the southern tip of Hainan island, with several beach bays along the coast; Sanya Phoenix Airport (SYX) is a short drive north-west of the centre.
Do You Need a Car in Sanya?
For a beach stay in one bay, often not: hotels, shuttles and taxis cover short hops, and parking at the busiest beaches is tight. A car pays off once you want to move between bays, visit Haitang Bay, drive into the mountains or explore the east coast. Taxi and ride-hailing apps work mainly in Chinese, which is a reason many visitors choose a car, if the licence rule can be met.
Our advice: check the licence rule first, then book the car for the days you leave your bay and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel. Use a compact car for town and coast roads; an SUV is only needed for luggage or mountain roads, and insurance does not cover unpaved tracks.

Parking, Bays and Hotel Areas
Each bay has its own traffic pattern. Dadonghai and Sanya Bay are busy in the evening, with narrow side streets and limited parking. Yalong Bay has wide roads and resort car parks, but holiday traffic is heavy. Cameras cover no-parking zones and bus lanes, so park only in marked bays or in the hotel or mall car parks, and ask the hotel what applies. Payment for parking is often cashless, so check the app or payment method before you leave the car.
- Save the hotel address in Chinese characters in your navigation app
- Park in marked bays or hotel car parks, never on pavements or in bus lanes
- Fines reach the agency, which charges you after the rental
Navigation and Language in Sanya
Navigation works best in Baidu Maps or Amap, set to the destination in Chinese. English-speaking staff are limited outside the main hotels, so keep your agency's contact details in a messaging app and a screenshot of your voucher. Before you drive off, ask the agency who to contact for a breakdown or an accident, and what to do if you need help in Chinese.
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Sanya, or collected at Sanya Phoenix Airport (SYX). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- Driving licence valid for China. Foreign licences and International Driving Permits are generally not accepted for driving in mainland China; visitors usually need a temporary Chinese driving licence. Rules for Hainan exist but change, so ask the agency exactly what you need before you book and before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines, camera tickets and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Sanya: Roads and Habits
Expect scooters and delivery riders to cross lanes without warning, buses to stop suddenly and drivers to change lanes with little signalling. Keep a generous gap and watch for pedestrians at crossings near the beaches. Sudden heavy rain is common in the wet season, and during typhoon season (roughly July to October) coastal roads can flood, so follow local alerts and avoid the shoreline when warnings are in force.
- First check the licence rule: foreign licences and IDPs are generally not valid in mainland China, and visitors usually need a temporary Chinese driving licence; confirm the current requirement with the agency
- Traffic drives on the right; cars are left-hand drive and turns on red may be restricted, so follow the signals and road markings
- Traffic cameras are everywhere (speed, red light, bus lanes, lane markings, illegal parking); fines are linked to the plate and reach the agency
- Zero tolerance for drink-driving: the only safe rule is no alcohol at all before driving
- No handheld phone while driving; seatbelts are compulsory for everyone and children need a suitable seat
- Electric scooters, motorbikes and delivery riders weave through traffic and often ignore signals; leave extra space and check mirrors before turning
- Google Maps is not usable; use a Chinese-language navigation app (Baidu Maps or Amap) and save the pick-up address in Chinese characters
- Do not leave Hainan or take the car off the island, and do not drive on unpaved tracks: insurance is not valid off-road, and island rules for the car are set by the agency
- Near hotels and beach promenades, some streets are one-way or restricted at busy times; follow the signs and use car parks
