📍 Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): at Katunayake, about 35 km north of Colombo and a few kilometres from Negombo, with the E03 expressway to the capital.
Why Rent a Car at Colombo Airport
Sri Lanka's best sights are spread around the island: beaches in the south, hill towns in the centre, ancient cities in the north. Trains and buses are cheap but slow and crowded, and a private taxi for several days costs far more than a rental. A car gives you control, especially for the Southern Expressway to Galle.
Our advice: do not drive far straight after a long flight. Many visitors spend the first night near the airport at Negombo, then collect the car the next morning or ask the provider to deliver it to the hotel.
Drive Times from CMB
Times are approximate and change a lot with the hour and the season; use a live navigation app for the real figure.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Negombo | ~10 km | 15–30 min |
| Colombo centre | ~35 km | 45–90 min |
| Bentota | ~100–110 km | about 2–2.5 hours |
| Galle | ~150 km | about 2–2.5 hours via expressway |
| Kandy | ~100–110 km | about 3–3.5 hours |
| Sigiriya | ~150 km | about 3.5–4 hours |
| Ella | ~270 km | about 7–8 hours |
Picking Up at CMB: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in the car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many will deliver to a hotel in Negombo or Colombo. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a named counter unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Late arrival? Many international flights land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) and, for visitors, a temporary Sri Lankan driving permit — rules for foreign drivers are strict and can change, so ask the agency exactly what you need before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at CMB
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: the dry season on the west and south coasts, roughly December to March, is the busiest and dearest; the southwest monsoon months from about May to September are quieter and usually cheaper
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Sri Lanka Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Expressway tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Expressways, Permits and Traffic
The E03 expressway links the airport with Colombo, and the Southern Expressway (E01) runs from Colombo to Galle and Matara. Expressways charge tolls, so ask the agency how it handles them. Away from the expressways, roads are busy and slow, with frequent stops at junctions and villages. Ask the agency about the permit you need as a visitor, and carry it with your licence at all times. Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental.
Driving Near CMB: Roads and Habits
Colombo's traffic is dense at most hours, and bus lanes, tuk-tuks and scooters make lane discipline loose. On hill roads, overtaking is common and dangerous; wait for a clear straight. Night driving is harder because lighting is patchy and pedestrians and animals use the road.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Roads are busy with buses, tuk-tuks, scooters, dogs and pedestrians; buses overtake aggressively, so keep a large gap
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50 km/h in towns, up to 70–80 km/h on main roads and up to 100 km/h on expressways); police checks are common
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Heavy rain can cause floods and landslides in the hill country, and mist cuts visibility on mountain roads
- Do not take the car off the paved road or onto beaches: insurance is not valid there
- A rental car stays on the island; it cannot be taken abroad
