📍 Hambantota: a port town on the south-east coast of Sri Lanka, about 240 km from Colombo.
Is a Car Worth It in Hambantota?
Public transport is thin here, and sights are far apart. A car lets you reach Yala's gate, lagoons, temples and quiet beaches on your schedule. Safari jeeps are booked separately, so the car is for getting to the gate.
Our advice: book for the days you explore and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel.

Roads and Safari Notes
Roads are quieter than in the west, but long, straight stretches tempt speeding and elephants can cross at night. Safari jeeps run from set gates; leave the rental car at your hotel or the gate car park.
- Avoid driving at night; animals cross the road
- Do not drive into the park yourself; use a licensed safari jeep
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in the south-east, or collected on the south-west coast. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) and, for visitors, a temporary Sri Lankan driving permit — rules for foreign drivers are strict and can change, so ask the agency exactly what you need before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Expressway tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Hambantota: Roads and Habits
Buses and lorries share the road and stop often. Watch for cattle and stray dogs.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Roads are busy with buses, tuk-tuks, scooters, dogs and pedestrians; buses overtake aggressively, so keep a large gap
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50 km/h in towns, up to 70–80 km/h on main roads and up to 100 km/h on expressways); police checks are common
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Heavy rain can cause floods and landslides in the hill country, and mist cuts visibility on mountain roads
- Do not take the car off the paved road or onto beaches: insurance is not valid there
- A rental car stays on the island; it cannot be taken abroad
