📍 Uroa: a bay and village area on the east coast of Unguja, about 35–40 km from Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ).
Is a Car Worth It in Uroa?
Uroa is one of the closer east-coast areas to Stone Town and the airport, so taxis are shorter and cheaper than for Nungwi. A car still pays off if you want to see Jozani, the south coast or the north without paying for each trip.
Our advice: book for the days you explore and ask the agency to deliver the car to your hotel. Many visitors choose a three-day rental and rely on taxis the rest of the time.

Roads Around the Bay and the Tide
The roads around the bay are quiet by island standards, but they pass through villages with speed bumps and unmarked crossings. At low tide the bay empties and people walk far out on the flats to collect seaweed; do not drive or park on the flats.
- Check the tide times before planning a beach walk
- Do not drive on sand or the flats: insurance does not apply
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Fines are passed to the agency, which may charge you after the rental
Back Roads and Navigation
Several small lanes connect Uroa to the main road and to neighbouring villages. Some are unpaved and turn soft in the rains. Stay on the signed roads and use offline maps, because mobile signal is patchy.
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Uroa, or collected at Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence and, for visitors in Zanzibar, a temporary local driving permit that the agency can usually arrange — rules change, so ask the agency exactly what you need before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines, parking and any local permit fee are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Uroa: Roads and Habits
Village streets have children, animals and bikes at the edge, and minibuses stop with no warning. Slow down early for speed bumps.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and expect roundabouts to be taken clockwise
- Visitors are generally asked for a temporary local driving permit in addition to the licence; the agency can tell you how it is arranged
- Police checkpoints are frequent on the main roads; stop when signalled and keep your licence, permit and rental papers in the car
- Speed limits are signed and often drop sharply in villages; speed bumps are common and often unmarked, so slow down early
- Dala-dala minibuses, motorbike taxis, bicycles and pedestrians share the road and stop without warning
- Avoid night driving: roads are poorly lit and unlit bikes, carts, people and animals are common
- Strict drink-driving rules — the safest approach is zero alcohol before driving
- Sand roads and beach tracks are not covered: insurance is not valid off-road or on the beach
- Rental cars from the island agencies are meant to stay on Zanzibar; ferries to the mainland are not for rental cars unless the agency has agreed in writing
