VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.
📍 Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ): on Unguja, the main island of Zanzibar, only a few kilometres south of Stone Town.
Why Rent a Car at Zanzibar Airport
The island's beaches are spread along the north, east and south coasts, and each resort is an hour or more from the airport. Taxis and shared minibuses work for a single transfer, but a rental car lets you change beaches, visit Jozani forest or a spice farm, and eat where you like without negotiating every ride.
Our advice: if your flight lands late or you are tired, take a transfer to the hotel and have the car delivered the next morning. Driving an unfamiliar car on the left in the dark, among unlit bikes and pedestrians, is a poor way to start a holiday.

Picking Up at ZNZ: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in the car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many deliver to a hotel in Stone Town or on the coast. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a named counter unless it is written on the car card. Ask whether the temporary local driving permit will be ready at hand-over or needs a short visit to an office.
Late arrival? Flights to the island often land in the evening. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and consider delivery to the hotel the next morning rather than driving to the coast in the dark.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence and, for visitors in Zanzibar, a temporary local driving permit that the agency can usually arrange — rules change, so ask the agency exactly what you need before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at ZNZ
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: the dry months, roughly June to October and December to February, are the busiest and dearest; the long rains from about March to May are quieter and usually cheaper
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Tanzania Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines, parking and any local permit fee are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Permits, Checkpoints and Speed Bumps
Visitors are generally asked for a temporary local driving permit; the agency can usually arrange it, but rules can change, so verify current requirements when you book. Police checkpoints are frequent on the roads out of Stone Town and on the cross-island road, and a calm, polite stop with documents ready is all that is needed. Villages have speed bumps, often barely marked, and they can damage a low car if you take them fast.
- Keep licence, IDP, local permit and rental papers in the car
- Slow down well before every village
- Fines are passed to the agency, which may charge you after the rental
Dala-Dala, Bikes and Night Driving
The airport road is paved, but the traffic mix is not: dala-dala minibuses stop anywhere, motorbike taxis weave through, and cyclists and pedestrians walk on the road edge. After dark many bikes and carts have no lights. Plan to reach your hotel before sunset when you can.
Driving Near ZNZ: Roads and Habits
The road from the airport into town is busy at morning and evening peaks, and Stone Town's centre is a maze of narrow, partly one-way lanes that are better left to walking. Head for the ring roads and the signed routes north, east and south, and use a navigation app with offline maps because signal is patchy inland.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and expect roundabouts to be taken clockwise
- Visitors are generally asked for a temporary local driving permit in addition to the licence; the agency can tell you how it is arranged
- Police checkpoints are frequent on the main roads; stop when signalled and keep your licence, permit and rental papers in the car
- Speed limits are signed and often drop sharply in villages; speed bumps are common and often unmarked, so slow down early
- Dala-dala minibuses, motorbike taxis, bicycles and pedestrians share the road and stop without warning
- Avoid night driving: roads are poorly lit and unlit bikes, carts, people and animals are common
- Strict drink-driving rules — the safest approach is zero alcohol before driving
- Sand roads and beach tracks are not covered: insurance is not valid off-road or on the beach
- Rental cars from the island agencies are meant to stay on Zanzibar; ferries to the mainland are not for rental cars unless the agency has agreed in writing
- Do not drive the sand tracks to remote beaches: insurance does not apply there
