📍 Hua Hin: a seaside town on the Gulf of Thailand in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, about 200–250 km south of Bangkok.
Is a Car Worth It in Hua Hin?
Hua Hin's centre, night market and beach are easy to cover on foot or by tuk-tuk. The car is for the rest: Khao Takiab and Pranburi to the south, Cha-am and Phetchaburi to the north, national parks and hot-spring or vineyard stops inland. Distances are long enough that taxis cost more than a rental day.
Our advice: collect the car in Bangkok if you are driving down, or book it for the days you explore and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel.

Roads and Parking Around Hua Hin
Highway 4 runs through the area and is the main road from Bangkok, with long straight stretches and heavy trucks. Hua Hin's own streets are quiet outside peak weekends; parking near the night market and beach fills in the evening.
- Fill up before long drives; stations are less frequent on rural roads
- Weekends and holidays bring heavy traffic from Bangkok
- Use signed car parks and avoid painted kerbs
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Hua Hin, or collected in Bangkok or at a nearby airport. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) — Thai rules expect foreign visitors to carry one with their home licence, and agencies and police may ask for it; confirm with the agency before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Hua Hin: Roads and Habits
Highway 4 is fast but has frequent U-turn lanes and trucks that stop and start. Watch for scooters on the hard shoulder and for sudden slowdowns near markets and temples.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Motorbikes and scooters weave through traffic and overtake on both sides; check mirrors and blind spots before every turn
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50–60 km/h in towns and 90–120 km/h on highways and motorways); police checks and cameras are common
- Heavy rain can flood roads and cut visibility; slow down and do not drive through standing water
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid there
- A rental car does not cross borders into Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar
