📍 Pattaya: a beach resort city on the Gulf of Thailand in Chonburi province, about 120–130 km from Suvarnabhumi (BKK).
Is a Car Worth It in Pattaya?
For the beach strip and Walking Street you do not need a car: baht buses, taxis and ride-hailing are cheap and everywhere. A car makes sense for the drive from Bangkok, for trips to farms, gardens, waterfalls and the nearby coast, and for staying in Jomtien, Naklua or a villa outside the centre.
Our advice: collect the car at Bangkok Airport if you are driving straight to Pattaya, or book it for the days you explore and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel.

Traffic and Parking in Pattaya
Pattaya's streets are busy, with one-way sections around Beach Road and Walking Street, many baht buses and scooters. Parking is the main issue: hotels may have limited bays, and public spaces fill in the evening and on weekends.
- Ask your hotel about parking before you book the car
- Use signed car parks and avoid painted kerbs; police tow and fine
- Use baht buses or taxis for the busiest evening hours
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Pattaya, or collected at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) — Thai rules expect foreign visitors to carry one with their home licence, and agencies and police may ask for it; confirm with the agency before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Pattaya: Roads and Habits
The motorway from Bangkok to Pattaya is fast, with toll gates and heavy traffic on Fridays and Sundays. Inside Pattaya, speeds are low but scooters and baht buses stop without warning.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Motorbikes and scooters weave through traffic and overtake on both sides; check mirrors and blind spots before every turn
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50–60 km/h in towns and 90–120 km/h on highways and motorways); police checks and cameras are common
- Heavy rain can flood roads and cut visibility; slow down and do not drive through standing water
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid there
- A rental car does not cross borders into Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar
