VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.
📍 Phuket International Airport (HKT): in the north of Phuket island, Thailand — close to Mai Khao and Nai Yang beaches and the bridge to the mainland.
Why Rent a Car at Phuket Airport
Phuket's beaches lie on the west coast, far apart and joined by hilly roads. There is no metro, the airport bus and shared taxis are slow, and a private taxi from the airport to a southern beach costs a good part of a rental day. A car lets you leave when you like and combine beaches, Phuket Town, viewpoints and markets in one day.
Our advice: if you stay in one resort and only want the beach, you may not need a car every day. If you want to explore, collect the car at the airport on arrival, or book it from the day you start exploring and ask the provider to deliver it to your hotel.

Picking Up at HKT: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in the car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many will deliver to a hotel anywhere on the island. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a specific named counter unless it is written on the car card. Enter your flight number when you book so the agent can track delays.
Late arrival? Many international flights land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) — Thai rules expect foreign visitors to carry one with their home licence, and agencies and police may ask for it; confirm with the agency before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at HKT
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: the cool, dry months from about November to March are the busiest on both coasts and the most expensive; the rainy months are quieter and usually cheaper
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Thailand Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Phuket Roads, Hills and Parking
The west-coast roads between Kata, Karon and Patong climb over headlands with sharp bends and steep drops, and the main road to Phuket Town is busy with trucks, buses and motorbikes. Parking at popular beaches and in Patong fills up in the high season; look for signed car parks and do not block driveways, because police tow and fine. Fines from police and cameras reach the agency, which charges you after the rental, sometimes weeks later and with a handling fee.
Driving Near HKT: Roads and Habits
Phuket's main north–south road runs down the centre of the island; side roads lead to the beaches. After heavy rain, hill roads can have standing water, leaves and gravel, so slow down. Night driving is harder than it looks: lighting is patchy, scooters often run without lights and pedestrians cross at unmarked points.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Motorbikes and scooters weave through traffic and overtake on both sides; check mirrors and blind spots before every turn
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50–60 km/h in towns and 90–120 km/h on highways and motorways); police checks and cameras are common
- Heavy rain can flood roads and cut visibility; slow down and do not drive through standing water
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid there
- A rental car does not cross borders into Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar
- Scooters are common: many travel insurance policies exclude them without a motorcycle licence, so a car is the safer and drier choice
