📍 Kata and Karon: two neighbouring beach areas on the southwest coast of Phuket, about 40–45 km from Phuket Airport (HKT).
Is a Car Worth It in Kata and Karon?
Kata and Karon beaches are easy to walk from many hotels, and shops, restaurants and a night market are close by. The south of Phuket is where a car helps: Nai Harn beach, Rawai, Promthep Cape, Chalong and Old Town are all a drive away, and taxis for several trips add up.
Our advice: book the car for the days you explore and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel. If you only plan beach days, a few taxi rides may be enough.

Hill Roads and Parking in the South
The road between Kata, Karon and Patong crosses a headland with steep bends, and the south roads to Nai Harn and Promthep Cape are narrow in places. Parking is easy at most beaches outside the high season; at Kata and Nai Harn in the dry months, use signed car parks and arrive early.
- Use low gears on steep descents and keep your distance on hill roads
- After heavy rain, gravel, leaves and standing water can make bends slippery
- Do not park on painted kerbs; police tow and fine
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Kata or Karon, or collected at Phuket Airport (HKT). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) — Thai rules expect foreign visitors to carry one with their home licence, and agencies and police may ask for it; confirm with the agency before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Kata and Karon: Roads and Habits
Traffic is lighter than in Patong, but scooters, minibuses and delivery trucks share every road. The sunset crowd at Promthep Cape and Nai Harn can block narrow approaches; plan to arrive early or late.
- Traffic drives on the left; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Motorbikes and scooters weave through traffic and overtake on both sides; check mirrors and blind spots before every turn
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50–60 km/h in towns and 90–120 km/h on highways and motorways); police checks and cameras are common
- Heavy rain can flood roads and cut visibility; slow down and do not drive through standing water
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid there
- A rental car does not cross borders into Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar
