📍 Sousse: a Sahel coast resort city; Monastir Airport (MIR) is about 20–30 km away.
Is a Car Worth It in Sousse?
The medina and the beach are easy on foot, and taxis are cheap. But the best day trips, the amphitheatre of El Jem and the holy city of Kairouan, are inland and awkward by louage or group tour. A car gives you a flexible schedule, especially in the heat of summer.
Our advice: book for the days you explore and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel in Sousse or Port El Kantaoui.

Sousse Traffic, Parking and the Medina
The central streets near the medina, port and Boulevard Hassouna Ayachi are crowded in the evening, and parking is hard to find in July and August. Use guarded car parks and walk into the medina. The A1 motorway towards Tunis may charge a toll; ask the agency how it handles it.
- Park outside the medina walls and walk in
- Avoid the beach strip at the evening peak in summer
- Keep valuables out of sight and fines are charged to you through the agency
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Sousse or Port El Kantaoui, or collected at Monastir Airport (MIR). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) may be requested alongside your national licence; rules and agency policies differ, so check with the agency what it accepts before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Motorway tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Sousse: Roads and Habits
Horse carts, scooters and loose lane discipline are normal in Sousse. Inland, watch for slow tractors and animals, and expect speed traps before towns.
- Traffic drives on the right; give way according to signs and expect roundabouts to be used loosely
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50 km/h in towns, about 90 km/h on open roads and up to about 110 km/h on the motorway); police checkpoints and speed traps are frequent
- Stop and be polite at checkpoints; keep your licence, passport copy and rental papers within reach
- Strict drink-driving rules — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- At night, unlit vehicles, carts, pedestrians and animals on the road are a real hazard; avoid long night drives
- Do not take the car off the paved road or into the desert: insurance is not valid there
- Some Saharan and border areas, notably near Libya and Algeria, are restricted or advised against; check your government's travel advice and the agency's rules
