📍 Tunis-Carthage Airport (TUN): the main airport of Tunisia, only a few kilometres north-east of central Tunis, close to the ruins of Carthage.
Why Rent a Car at Tunis Airport
Tunisia's sights are spread out: Roman sites inland, holy Kairouan, coastal resorts and the Cap Bon peninsula. Louages (shared taxis) and trains cover the main lines, but a car is far more flexible for sites such as Dougga and El Jem and for reaching out-of-town hotels.
Our advice: if you land late or are not used to Tunisian traffic, do not drive into central Tunis straight away. Ask the provider to deliver the car to your hotel or collect it the next morning when the roads are calmer.
Drive Times from TUN
Times are approximate and change a lot with the hour and the season; use a live navigation app for the real figure.

Picking Up at TUN: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in the car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many will deliver to a hotel in Tunis, Carthage or La Marsa. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a named counter unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Late arrival? Many international flights land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) may be requested alongside your national licence; rules and agency policies differ, so check with the agency what it accepts before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at TUN
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: July and August, and the Easter and Christmas weeks, are the busiest and dearest; spring and autumn are milder and usually cheaper, and winter is the quietest
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Tunisia Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Motorway tolls, fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Leaving Tunis: Ring Roads, the A1 and Checkpoints
From the airport you join the ring roads and urban motorways around the capital; signage can be confusing, so set your navigation before you start. The A1 motorway heads south towards Hammamet, Sousse and beyond and may charge a toll; ask the agency how it handles this and carry some small change. Expect police checkpoints at city exits, especially on main roads; slow down, greet the officer and show your documents when asked.
Parking in Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said
Central Tunis and the medina have very limited parking and heavy congestion. At Sidi Bou Said and Carthage, car parks fill by late morning in season and street parking is informal. Park in signed or guarded car parks and never leave luggage visible in the car.
Driving Near TUN: Roads and Habits
Tunis traffic is dense, with taxis stopping suddenly and lane markings often ignored. Outside the city, trucks and slow vehicles share two-lane roads, and unlit vehicles after dark are common. Allow extra time, keep a large gap and avoid driving into the centre at rush hour.
- Traffic drives on the right; give way according to signs and expect roundabouts to be used loosely
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50 km/h in towns, about 90 km/h on open roads and up to about 110 km/h on the motorway); police checkpoints and speed traps are frequent
- Stop and be polite at checkpoints; keep your licence, passport copy and rental papers within reach
- Strict drink-driving rules — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- At night, unlit vehicles, carts, pedestrians and animals on the road are a real hazard; avoid long night drives
- Do not take the car off the paved road or into the desert: insurance is not valid there
- Some Saharan and border areas, notably near Libya and Algeria, are restricted or advised against; check your government's travel advice and the agency's rules
