📍 Dilijan: a forested spa town in the Tavush region, roughly 100–120 km from Yerevan; Yerevan Airport (EVN) is the usual arrival point.
Is a Car Worth It in Dilijan?
The old street is walkable, but the monasteries and lakes lie in the forest and are hard to reach by minibus. A car gives you the flexibility to visit early, stay for a hike and leave when the weather turns.
Our advice: collect the car in Yerevan and drive via Lake Sevan, or ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel in Dilijan. Check the weather before the mountain section.

Forest Roads, Fog and Parking in Dilijan
Roads around Dilijan climb through forest with tight bends, patches of fog and, in cold months, snow and ice. The tunnel and pass section on the route from Sevan can be slower in bad weather. In the old town, streets are narrow and parking is limited; park at your guesthouse or in signed areas. Some forest tracks are gravel, and rental insurance does not cover them.
- Slow down in fog and after rain; wet roads can be slick
- Do not drive on gravel forest tracks unless the car card allows it
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Dilijan, or collected in Yerevan or at Yerevan Airport (EVN). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence — requirements depend on the country that issued your licence and on the agency, so check with the agency which documents it accepts before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Dilijan: Roads and Habits
Expect sharp bends, trucks on the approach roads and animals near villages. Keep to the paved roads and leave daylight margin before returning to the hotel.
- Traffic drives on the right; overtake on the left
- Speed limits are signed (typically 60 km/h in towns and higher on open roads); police and speed cameras operate, so check the signs
- Strict drink-driving rules — the safest approach is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Mountain roads climb through passes with bends, fog and rockfall; in winter expect snow and ice, and carry what the agency recommends
- Yerevan traffic can be aggressive, with sudden lane changes and tight parking; keep a larger gap than at home
- Do not take the car off the paved road onto mountain tracks: insurance is not valid off-road
- Crossing a border with a rental car needs the agency's written permission; check before you travel
