📍 Yerevan: the capital of Armenia; Yerevan Airport (EVN) is about 10–12 km west of the centre.
Do You Need a Car in Yerevan?
Not for the centre. Most sights around Republic Square, the Cascade and the markets are close together, taxis and ride-hailing are cheap, and parking is limited. The metro and buses cover the main routes.
A car makes sense when you leave: monasteries in gorges, Lake Sevan and the vineyards are far from public transport. Our advice: book from the day you leave Yerevan and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel.

City Traffic and Parking in Yerevan
Yerevan's centre has one-way streets, narrow side roads and cars parked on both sides. Drivers change lanes without warning, and pedestrians cross at unmarked points. Look for paid street parking or private lots, check the signs for time limits and keep receipts. Rush hours on the main avenues and the roads out of the city are slow.
- Ask the hotel about parking before you collect the car
- Avoid driving in the centre at rush hour if you can
- Do not leave valuables visible in a parked car
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Yerevan, or collected at Yerevan Airport (EVN). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence — requirements depend on the country that issued your licence and on the agency, so check with the agency which documents it accepts before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Yerevan: Roads and Habits
Expect cars cutting in, double parking and minibuses stopping without warning. Use navigation, keep a larger gap than at home and stay calm; a defensive style works best.
- Traffic drives on the right; overtake on the left
- Speed limits are signed (typically 60 km/h in towns and higher on open roads); police and speed cameras operate, so check the signs
- Strict drink-driving rules — the safest approach is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Mountain roads climb through passes with bends, fog and rockfall; in winter expect snow and ice, and carry what the agency recommends
- Yerevan traffic can be aggressive, with sudden lane changes and tight parking; keep a larger gap than at home
- Do not take the car off the paved road onto mountain tracks: insurance is not valid off-road
- Crossing a border with a rental car needs the agency's written permission; check before you travel
