📍 Sofia Airport (SOF): about 10 km east of the centre of Sofia, with Terminals 1 and 2 and a short link to the ring road and the A1 and A2 motorways.
Why Rent a Car at Sofia Airport
Sofia has a metro line to the airport, buses and taxis, and the centre is compact enough for trams and walking. Beyond the city the picture changes: monasteries, mountain villages and the old towns of the interior are served by slow trains and infrequent buses. A car turns a three-day tour into a flexible loop.
Our advice: if you stay in Sofia first, collect the car on the day you leave the city, so you avoid paying for parking. If you land and drive straight on, pick it up at the airport and keep the first drive short after a night flight.
Drive Times from SOF
Times are approximate and change a lot with the hour and the season; use a live navigation app for the real figure.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Sofia centre | ~10 km | 20–40 min |
| Rila Monastery | ~120 km | about 2–2.5 hours |
| Plovdiv | ~150 km | about 1.5–2 hours via the A1 |
| Bansko | ~160 km | about 2.5–3 hours |
| Veliko Tarnovo | ~220 km | about 3–3.5 hours |
| Burgas | ~390 km | about 4–5 hours via the A1 |
| Varna | ~470 km | about 5–6 hours |
Picking Up at SOF: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, some in a car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many deliver to a hotel in the city. Check which terminal your flight uses and enter it with your flight number when you book. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a named counter unless it is written on the car card.
Late arrival? Many international flights land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- Valid driving licence: licences issued in EU/EEA countries are generally accepted, while for other licences the agency may ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a translation or Latin-script licence — rules differ by country of issue and can change, so confirm exactly what you need with the agency before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at SOF
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: July and August on the Black Sea coast are the busiest and dearest weeks, and the ski season from about December to March lifts prices around Bansko; spring and autumn are quieter and usually cheaper
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Bulgaria Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Tolls, fines and parking are billed separately; ask the agency whether the e-vignette for national roads is included. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
E-Vignette, Ring Road and Motorways
From the airport you reach the Sofia ring road in a few minutes, and from there the A1 (Trakia) towards Plovdiv and Burgas, the A2 (Hemus) towards Varna in the north (parts are still unfinished, so expect slower sections) and the A3 (Struma) towards the Greek border in the south-west. National roads outside towns need an e-vignette; ask the agency to confirm it is included and valid for your dates. Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental.
Winter, Mountain Roads and Border Plans
Passes towards Rila, Pirin and the Balkan range can be icy or snowy from late autumn to spring, and the agency may require chains or winter tyres at certain times. If you plan to cross into Greece, Serbia, North Macedonia or Romania, tell the agency in advance: it may need to arrange permission and a green card.
Driving Near SOF: Roads and Habits
Sofia's ring road and boulevards are busy at rush hours, and trams share some streets. Outside the city, single carriageways carry slow lorries, so overtaking is tempting but risky; wait for a clear straight. Night driving is harder in the countryside because of poor lighting, potholes and animals.
- Traffic drives on the right; follow priority signs carefully, because local drivers often pull out or change lanes late
- Typical limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside built-up areas and up to 140 km/h on motorways, but always follow the signs; speed cameras and police radar are common
- Most national roads outside towns require an e-vignette; rental cars are usually supplied with one, but confirm with the agency, because cameras check it and the fine goes to the renter
- Strict drink-driving limit (low blood-alcohol level) with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- Seatbelts are compulsory, no handheld phone, and children need a suitable seat; keep dipped headlights on as local rules require and check the current rule with the agency
- Watch for potholes, horse carts, tractors, stray dogs and slow lorries on single-carriageway roads; overtaking on bends is a common cause of crashes
- Winter driving in the mountains may require winter tyres or chains; check with the agency, and expect snow on passes from late autumn to spring
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid off-road or on beaches and forest tracks
- Crossing a border (Greece, Romania, Turkey, Serbia and others) needs the agency's written permission and a green card; some agencies forbid it or charge a fee
