📍 Sozopol: a fishing town and old quarter on a rocky peninsula on the southern Black Sea coast, about 40 km from Burgas Airport (BOJ).
Is a Car Worth It in Sozopol?
The old quarter and the harbour are on foot, and the town beach is close. Beyond Sozopol, public transport thins out quickly, and beaches, reserves and villages to the south are easy only by car.
Our advice: park at the edge of the old town or at your hotel, walk in and use the car for day trips. Ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel and confirm parking.

Old-Town Lanes, Parking and the Southern Coast
The old quarter has steep cobbled lanes and limited access for cars; leave the car at the paid lots near the entrance or at your hotel and walk in. The coast road south passes through forest with bends and sometimes sandy verges. Small beach access tracks are not covered by insurance.
- Arrive early in July and August; the lots fill
- Stay on paved roads south of town
- Refuel in Sozopol or Burgas before long southern drives
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Sozopol, or collected at Burgas Airport (BOJ). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- Valid driving licence: licences issued in EU/EEA countries are generally accepted, while for other licences the agency may ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a translation or Latin-script licence — rules differ by country of issue and can change, so confirm exactly what you need with the agency before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Tolls, fines and parking are billed separately; ask the agency whether the e-vignette for national roads is included. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Sozopol: Roads and Habits
The road from Burgas is busy on summer weekends, with slow coaches and campers. South of town, watch for animals and cyclists, and use your lights in forest stretches.
- Traffic drives on the right; follow priority signs carefully, because local drivers often pull out or change lanes late
- Typical limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside built-up areas and up to 140 km/h on motorways, but always follow the signs; speed cameras and police radar are common
- Most national roads outside towns require an e-vignette; rental cars are usually supplied with one, but confirm with the agency, because cameras check it and the fine goes to the renter
- Strict drink-driving limit (low blood-alcohol level) with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- Seatbelts are compulsory, no handheld phone, and children need a suitable seat; keep dipped headlights on as local rules require and check the current rule with the agency
- Watch for potholes, horse carts, tractors, stray dogs and slow lorries on single-carriageway roads; overtaking on bends is a common cause of crashes
- Winter driving in the mountains may require winter tyres or chains; check with the agency, and expect snow on passes from late autumn to spring
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid off-road or on beaches and forest tracks
- Crossing a border (Greece, Romania, Turkey, Serbia and others) needs the agency's written permission and a green card; some agencies forbid it or charge a fee
