📍 Paphos: a coastal town on the west coast of Cyprus, a short drive from Paphos Airport (PFO).
Is a Car Worth It in Paphos?
Kato Paphos has a compact set of sights — the harbour, the mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings — but the best beaches and viewpoints are scattered along a coast road, and buses are infrequent. A car lets you reach them early, before the heat and the tour coaches.
Our advice: book for the days you explore and ask the agency to deliver it to your hotel. Keep to paved roads: insurance is not valid on the Akamas tracks.

Harbour Parking and the Coast Road
Parking near the harbour and Kato Paphos is limited in summer; use signed car parks and walk in. The coast road to Peyia and Polis is paved but busy, and the road east towards Limassol is a fast motorway section. The Akamas tracks are rough and not covered by insurance.
- Park outside the harbour area in summer
- Do not drive the Akamas tracks in a standard car
- Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency, which charges you after the rental
Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up is usually delivered to your hotel in Paphos, or collected at Paphos Airport (PFO). Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- Your national driving licence and, depending on where it was issued, an International Driving Permit (IDP) — licences from the EU and the UK are generally accepted for visitors, while other licences may need an IDP, so ask the agency what it requires before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines and parking are billed separately, and cover usually does not extend to the northern part of the island. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving in Paphos: Roads and Habits
Tourist traffic is slow near the harbour at night, and mini-roundabouts are clockwise. Hill villages have steep, narrow streets; park at the edge and walk.
- Traffic drives on the left, as in the UK; look right when pulling out and take roundabouts clockwise
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50 km/h in towns, around 80 km/h on main roads and up to 100 km/h on motorways); speed cameras and police checks are used, so follow the signs
- Strict drink-driving limit with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Mountain roads in the Troodos can be icy or snowy in winter, and heat and fatigue are a risk on summer drives
- Do not take the car off the paved road, onto beaches or onto rough forest tracks: insurance is not valid there
- Crossing to the northern part of the island is allowed only with the agency's permission and extra insurance, which is often not covered — ask first
- A rental car stays on the island; it cannot be taken abroad or on a ferry
