📍 Dalaman Airport (DLM): on the south-west coast of Turkey, near the town of Dalaman, about 50 km from Fethiye and 95 km from Marmaris.
Why Rent a Car at Dalaman Airport
The best of this region is spread across bays, lagoons and mountain villages that buses reach only slowly. A car lets you swim at a quiet cove in the morning, visit rock tombs or a river estuary at noon, and eat in a village at night.
Our advice: if you stay in one resort, rent for the days you explore and ask the provider to deliver the car to the hotel. If you plan to drive Dalaman to Kalkan or Kas, collect the car at the airport and start in the morning.
Drive Times from DLM
Times are approximate and change a lot with the hour and the season; use a live navigation app for the real figure.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Dalyan | ~30 km | about 35–50 min |
| Fethiye | ~50 km | about 50–70 min |
| Oludeniz | ~60 km | about 1–1.25 hours |
| Marmaris | ~95 km | about 1.25–1.75 hours |
| Kalkan | ~100–110 km | about 1.5–2 hours |
| Kas | ~140–150 km | about 2–2.5 hours |
Picking Up at DLM: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
Hand-over differs by agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in the car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many deliver to a hotel in Fethiye, Marmaris or Dalyan. Use the "Specify location" option in the search, and do not rely on a named counter unless it is written on the car card.
Late arrival? Many international flights land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- a valid national driving licence and, depending on the agency and your home country, an International Driving Permit (IDP) — rules differ by licence type, so ask the agency what it accepts before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at DLM
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: July and August on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, plus Easter and Turkish holiday periods, are the busiest and dearest; spring and autumn are calmer, and winter is cheapest on the coast
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Turkey Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Motorway and bridge tolls (HGS/OGS), fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
The D400, Mountain Roads and Parking
The D400 links Dalaman with Fethiye and, via mountain sections, with Kalkan and Kas. It is mostly well surfaced but has bends, slow lorries and summer queues. Side roads to Dalyan and the Datca peninsula are narrower. Popular beaches and old towns have limited parking, and some roads to bays are steep or unpaved: insurance is generally not valid on unpaved tracks. Fines from police and cameras are sent to the agency.
Driving Near DLM: Roads and Habits
After Dalaman the road alternates between fast straights and winding hill sections with limited overtaking. Watch for tractors, minibuses stopping and roadside fruit stalls. Avoid late-night driving on the bends, where there are few lights.
- Traffic drives on the right; overtake on the left and give way as signed at roundabouts
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50 km/h in towns, about 90 km/h on main roads and up to 120 km/h on motorways); speed cameras and mobile radar are common, so keep to the signed limit
- Strict drink-driving rules with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- Seatbelts are compulsory and handheld phones are not allowed; children need a suitable seat
- Motorways and bridges use electronic tolls (HGS/OGS tags or similar); ask the agency how the car is equipped and how tolls are charged later
- Drivers can be aggressive: expect tailgating, late lane changes and minibuses (dolmus) stopping suddenly
- In mountain areas, winter driving rules and snow or ice can apply; ask the agency about tyres and chains
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid on unpaved tracks
