VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.
📍 Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB): south of Izmir on the Aegean coast, about 18 km from the city centre, with motorway links to Cesme and Aydin.
Why Rent a Car at Izmir Airport
The region combines beach towns, ancient sites and wine villages, each an hour or more from the next. Buses and trains connect the main towns but not the smaller beaches or ruins.
Our advice: if you plan to stay in Izmir city first, use the metro and taxis, then collect the car when you leave. If you are going straight to Cesme or Kusadasi, collect at the airport in daylight.
Drive Times from ADB
Times are approximate and change a lot with the hour and the season; use a live navigation app for the real figure.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Izmir centre | ~18 km | 25–45 min |
| Selcuk (Ephesus) | ~60–65 km | about 45–60 min |
| Kusadasi | ~75–80 km | about 1–1.25 hours |
| Alacati | ~70–75 km | about 55–75 min |
| Cesme | ~80–85 km | about 1–1.25 hours |
| Bergama (Pergamon) | ~110 km | about 1.5–2 hours |
Picking Up at ADB: Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
Hand-over differs by agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in the car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many deliver to a hotel in Izmir, Cesme or Kusadasi. Use the "Specify location" option in the search and do not rely on a named counter unless it is written on the car card.
Late arrival? Many international flights land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- a valid national driving licence and, depending on the agency and your home country, an International Driving Permit (IDP) — rules differ by licence type, so ask the agency what it accepts before you travel
- Passport and the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at ADB
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: July and August on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, plus Easter and Turkish holiday periods, are the busiest and dearest; spring and autumn are calmer, and winter is cheapest on the coast
- Car class: an automatic SUV or pick-up costs clearly more than a compact car
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Turkey Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Motorway and bridge tolls (HGS/OGS), fines and parking are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Motorways, Tolls and City Traffic
The motorways from Izmir towards Cesme and towards Aydin and Kusadasi are fast, and some sections use electronic tolls (HGS/OGS); the rental normally handles the tag and charges you later. Izmir's ring roads queue at rush hours, and the Cesme road is busy on summer weekends. Park in signed car parks; in Alacati, the old town is mostly pedestrian and car parks fill by midday.
Driving Near ADB: Roads and Habits
Izmir's drivers change lanes quickly and tailgate. Outside the city, summer weekends and holiday returns slow the Cesme motorway. Allow extra time for the airport return.
- Traffic drives on the right; overtake on the left and give way as signed at roundabouts
- Speed limits are signed (typically 50 km/h in towns, about 90 km/h on main roads and up to 120 km/h on motorways); speed cameras and mobile radar are common, so keep to the signed limit
- Strict drink-driving rules with heavy penalties — the safest rule is zero alcohol before driving
- Seatbelts are compulsory and handheld phones are not allowed; children need a suitable seat
- Motorways and bridges use electronic tolls (HGS/OGS tags or similar); ask the agency how the car is equipped and how tolls are charged later
- Drivers can be aggressive: expect tailgating, late lane changes and minibuses (dolmus) stopping suddenly
- In mountain areas, winter driving rules and snow or ice can apply; ask the agency about tyres and chains
- Do not take the car off the paved road: insurance is not valid on unpaved tracks
