📍 Zayed International Airport (AUH): Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates — about 30 km east of the city centre, on the highway towards Dubai.
Why Rent a Car at Abu Dhabi Airport
The airport is outside the city, so the first decision is how to get into town: taxi, bus or your own car. A rental pays off if your plans are spread out — a mosque in the morning, a museum on Saadiyat, a theme park on Yas, dinner on the Corniche — because Abu Dhabi is a city of long, fast roads and big distances between sights, with little walkable space between them.
A second reason is the one-way trip: many visitors fly into Abu Dhabi and out of Dubai, or the other way round. Some agencies allow a different return place, usually for a fee. Choose the pick-up and return locations with the "Specify location" option in the search and read the one-way terms on the car card.
Drive Times from AUH
Times are approximate and depend heavily on the hour; use live navigation for the real figure.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Abu Dhabi city centre | ~30 km | 25–40 min |
| Yas Island | short drive from the airport | about 20–25 min |
| Saadiyat Island | ~45 km | 40–55 min |
| Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque | ~30–35 km | 30–40 min |
| Dubai | ~110–130 km | 1–1.5 hours |
| Al Ain | ~150 km | about 1.5 hours |
Picking Up at Zayed International Airport
AUH has a single large passenger terminal, Terminal A, so the terminal choice is simple. What varies is the hand-over: some agencies meet you in the arrivals area, some in a car park, some at a yard nearby with a shuttle, and many deliver to a hotel in the city. Do not rely on a named desk unless it is written on the car card. Give the provider your flight number, because several long-haul flights land at night, and confirm any out-of-hours fee.
What to Have Ready
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) for drivers whose licence is not accepted directly — check with the agency before you travel
- Passport and proof of entry, plus the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card, so use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Darb Tolls, Parking and Fines in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi has its own toll system, Darb, with gates on the main bridges and tunnel approaches around the island. It is charged mainly at peak hours on working days. Rental cars are tracked; the agency collects any charges from you after the rental, sometimes with an administration fee. Ask how the agency handles it before you book.
Street parking in the city is paid and managed by the municipality, usually by app, machine or text message, with zones and hours shown on the signs. Cameras are common and fines are sent to the agency, which charges you, often weeks later and with a handling fee. If you drive on to Dubai, you will also meet Salik gates.
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit to cover it. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document. Our full UAE guide explains this in more detail.
Driving in Abu Dhabi: Roads and Habits
Roads are wide, well lit and signed in Arabic and English, and traffic moves fast. The practical points:
- Zero tolerance for drink-driving — do not drive after any alcohol
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Speed cameras are frequent and tolerance is small; limits change often, so follow the signs
- Do not drive onto sand or off-road: insurance is not valid there
- Fog on winter mornings and blowing sand can cut visibility quickly; slow down and keep your distance
- A rental car does not cross into Oman without the agency's written permission, extra insurance and a fee
