📍 Dubai International Airport (DXB): Dubai, United Arab Emirates — close to Deira and Dubai Creek, with direct roads to the E11 and E311 highways.
Why Rent a Car at Dubai Airport
DXB is one of the world's busiest airports for international passengers, and arrivals are fast and well signed. Taxis and the Dubai Metro both serve the terminals, so for a short stay inside the city you may not need a car. The case for renting is freedom: no waiting for a taxi at night, no surge pricing, and the ability to add Abu Dhabi, the mountains or the east coast without joining a tour.
Our advice: collect the car at the airport if you are leaving Dubai the same day or staying outside the metro area; if you are spending the first days in the city centre, book the car from the day you leave and ask the provider to deliver it to your hotel.
Drive Times from DXB
Times are approximate and change a lot with the hour; use a live navigation app for the real figure.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Deira and Dubai Creek | ~5–10 km | 10–20 min |
| Downtown Dubai and Burj Khalifa | ~15 km | 15–25 min |
| Dubai Marina | ~35–40 km | 30–45 min |
| Palm Jumeirah | ~35–40 km | 35–50 min |
| Sharjah city | ~20–25 km | 25–40 min |
| Abu Dhabi city | ~140 km | 1.5–2 hours |
| Ras Al Khaimah | ~100–120 km | about 1–1.5 hours |
| Hatta | ~130 km | about 1.5 hours |
Picking Up at DXB: Terminals, Meeting Points and Late Arrivals
DXB has three passenger terminals, and each is used by different airlines — check the terminal on your ticket and enter it, with your flight number, when you book. How the car is handed over depends on the agency: some meet you in the arrivals area, some in the car park, some at a nearby yard with a shuttle, and many will deliver to a hotel anywhere in Dubai. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and do not rely on a specific named counter unless it is written on the car card.
Late arrival? Many flights into Dubai land late at night. Give the provider your flight number, confirm the meeting point and any out-of-hours fee, and check that the phone number on your voucher answers messages.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) for drivers from countries whose licences are not accepted directly — check with the agency before you travel
- Passport and proof of entry, plus the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card, so look for the No credit card or No deposit filter if you need an alternative
What Affects the Price of a Rental at DXB
We do not quote a fixed price here, because rates for the same car change with dates and availability. Look at the live search for your exact days. The main factors:
- Season: the cooler months from roughly October to April are the busiest; summer is hot and usually easier to book
- Car class: an automatic SUV costs clearly more than a compact sedan
- Rental length: weekly and longer rentals usually lower the daily rate
- Insurance level: full coverage adds a daily amount but often removes the deposit
- Pick-up and return place: airport and out-of-hours pick-up, delivery and one-way returns can carry fees
When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Dubai Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit to cover it. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document. Our full UAE guide covers deposits and insurance in more detail.
Salik Tolls, Parking and Fines in Dubai
Salik gates are on the main Dubai highways. You drive through without stopping, and each crossing is charged to the car's tag. The agency collects these charges from you after the rental, and some add an administration fee — ask how it works before you book.
Paid parking is common in Dubai, with zones marked on the street and payment by machine, app or text message; the hours and tariffs are on the signs. Traffic fines are issued by cameras and sent to the agency, which charges you, sometimes weeks later and with a handling fee. Keep to the signed limits and park only in marked bays.
Driving in Dubai: Roads and Habits
Dubai's main arteries are the E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road), running along the coast, and the E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road) and E611 further inland. They are wide and fast, but exits come quickly and are often tight. Move into the exit lane early, keep your distance and expect sudden lane changes.
- Zero tolerance for drink-driving — do not drive after any alcohol
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Do not take a rental car off-road or onto sand: insurance is not valid there
- Avoid standing water after heavy rain; underpasses can flood quickly
- A car does not cross into Oman without written permission, extra insurance and a fee — ask the agency first
