📍 Ras Al Khaimah: the northernmost large emirate of the UAE, between the Gulf coast and the Hajar mountains, about 100–120 km north-east of Dubai.
Why Rent a Car in Ras Al Khaimah
Ras Al Khaimah is spread out: resorts on Al Marjan Island and the beach strip, the old town and fort around the creek, villages and date palms inland, and the mountains to the east. A car links them all and lets you reach the mountain road at the right time of day, ahead of the crowds and the midday heat.
It is also the easiest emirate for a self-drive day trip from Dubai or Sharjah, with fast highways and little traffic outside rush hour. If you stay in a resort and only want the beach, you can skip the car; if you want Jebel Jais, the old town and a dinner somewhere else, book one.

Jebel Jais: The Mountain Road
Jebel Jais is part of the Hajar mountains, with a summit of about 1,934 m on the border with Oman. The road on the UAE side is about 36 km long, with hairpin bends, car parks, viewpoints and a viewing platform near the top. It is also home to a zipline that is advertised as the world's longest.
- Drive carefully on the hairpins and keep to the speed limit; the road is popular with cyclists and tour buses
- Temperatures drop with altitude, and fog and cloud can appear quickly; bring a layer and slow down in poor visibility
- Check weather and any closures before you go; roads can be wet or restricted after storms
- Do not drive onto tracks or wadis: insurance is not valid off the paved road
- Fill up before you go up; petrol stations are not on the mountain road

Pick-Up and Delivery
Pick-up in Ras Al Khaimah is usually at RKT airport or delivered to your hotel or resort. Use the "Specify location" option in the search to choose, and check the car card for any fee. Do not rely on a named office unless it is written on the car card. If you arrive late, give the provider your flight number.
Documents and Age
- Valid driving licence, usually held for at least a year; minimum age is typically 21 (23 or 25 for larger or premium cars)
- International Driving Permit (IDP) for drivers whose licence is not accepted directly — check with the agency before you travel
- Passport and proof of entry, plus the booking voucher
- A payment method that matches the offer: many agencies block the deposit on a credit card; use the No deposit or No credit card filter if you need an alternative
Insurance and Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess — your share of any damage — can be large and the agency blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. Typical exclusions are tyres, glass, the underbody, interior damage and lost keys, and the cover is not valid off-road. Fines are billed separately. Photograph the car with the agent at pick-up and return and make sure all damage is in the acceptance document.
Driving Notes
- Zero tolerance for drink-driving — do not drive after any alcohol
- No handheld phone; seatbelts are compulsory and children need a suitable seat
- Cameras are frequent and fines are sent to the agency, which charges you
- A rental car does not cross into Oman without written permission, extra insurance and a fee
